Children & families


Federal Government announce an expansion of the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngster (HIPPY) to support Indigenous families in and additional 50 communities across Australia. BSL Media Release 19/07/2015. Media release 01/11/2013. This will bring the number of HIPPY sites supported from 50 to 100 commencing from 2013 to 2015[1].

Community developments (and partnerships)

A new centre opened at 59 Craigieburn Rd, Craigieburn (Connections @Craigieburn)  in June 2013. Located within the old Hume Libraries building, the new centre is a shared facility with several Not for profit agencies located under the one roof. Official opening 8th August 2013. Media release 08/08/2013 The nine partner agencies involved at the centre will be Anglicare, BSL< Berry Street, Dianella Community Health, CVGT Australia, Broadmeadows Disability Services, Kildonan Uniting Care, Lentara Uniting Care and Youth Projects[2].


The Saver Plus Program, a partnership with ANZ Bank, celebrated its 10th anniversary. It has become the largest and longest running matched savings and financial education program in the world [3].    


The After Now project involved the participation of more than 250 people from across Australia. Its aim was to explore different scenarios of Australia's future and to respond to many in the Brotherhood community who have expressed a strong desire for discussion about what sort of society Australia is evolving towards[4].    


Employment and training


Announcement by Minister Lovell of the Victorian Government's second youth foyer to be operated at Holmesglen TAFE, Waverley Campus. The youth foyer provide opportunity for highly disadvantaged young people aged between 16 and 25 years, to gain education. Fundraising & resources


As part of the Open Gardens Australia weekend owners of Cloverly Garden in Hawthorn gave part of the proceeds to Brotherhood of St Laurence, March 2013. Media Release 15/03/2013


Older People


The TRACS (Training, Research and Aged Care Services) Project, supported by the Australian Government, was developed in partnership with RMIT University. It aims to develop the aged care workforce, to provide staff and students with opportunities to extend their knowledge and skills [5].    

Organisational aspects

A Volunteers lunch was held in May 2013.


A digital Inclusion symposium was held in May at the ANZ facilities in Docklands. A range of speakers included Senator Conroy, ....



Refugees and Settlement


Brotherhood of St Laurence and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne sponsored a seven meter banner saying " Let's fully welcome refugees" It was installed on the spire of St Paul's Cathedral. Media Release 08/08/2013


A $55,000 Australian Government grant provided a new playground and outdoor barbecue area at the Brotherhood of St Laurence-auspiced African Australian Community Centre in Footscray. Media Release 29/08/2013


Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre in partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence ran a Drive to Thrive program, supporting nine refugees to obtain their drivers licence. Media release 04/10/2013


The Brotherhood's Given the Chance program for refugees and asylum seekers was expanded to include older workers, youth at risk and long-term unemployed [6].

Brotherhood enterprises


The Hunter Gatherer retail shop in St Kilda closed its doors.

Social Enterprise's Hunter Gatherer have a stand at the Sustainable Living Festival at the Melbourne Town Hall on the 22nd of February 2013 to show how to transform household trash into treasure. Media release
