1958

Authorisation for establishment of a Settlement at Lara.

 

1959

St Laurence Park, Lara, opens with 4 cottages on 3 October 1959.  Fr Tucker, aged 75, leaves Carrum Downs and becomes the first resident at St Laurence Park (Handfield, 1980 Friends and Brothers p.186).

 

1960

Planting of 2,500 trees and shrubs completed at St Laurence Park with help from Geelong Grammar boys (BSL Annual Report 1959-1960). 

 

St Laurence Park grows to 17 cottages, including a staff house and Father Tucker’s home, with Geelong Apex Club and Geelong Grammar School boys each building a cottage.  Applications were received from all over Victoria, with priority given to applicants in the Geelong and surrounding districts (BSL Annual Report 1959-1960).  

 

1961

St Laurence Park, Lara, grows to fifteen cottages, with plans for a community centre and flats.

 

1962

BSL staff and residents of Carrum Downs & St Laurence Park, Lara constitute a CAA Group. Their contributions plus donations made to the BSL for overseas aid provide a welfare worker in a slum area in Poona and finance the visits to India of 3 young Australians to work in youth work camps organised by Service Civil International.  One of these was a member of the Brotherhood’s Children’s Centre staff who spent time in a nursery for Tibetan refugee children.

 

1968

Tucker Court” opened at St Laurence Park, Lara, providing self-contained flats for the elderly.
