Mallett, Shelley
Shelley Mallett started as a Professorial Fellow in Social Policy in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne and Director, Social Policy and Research Centre, at BSL in 2014 to June 2023.
Shelley’s career was diverse, spanning service delivery, service development and training, as well as academic research and teaching. Shelley gained her PhD from La Trobe University after completing earlier degrees in Arts and speech pathology.
While her research interests were broad, she had particular expertise in homelessness and housing research, especially youth homelessness.
A former member of the Victorian Drug and Alcohol Prevention Council and longstanding board member of the Council to Homeless Persons, she currently co-chairs the Australian Bureau of Statistics Homelessness Reference group.
Shelley is the author of two books, including Moving out and moving on: young people’s pathways in and through homelessness, and the recipient of several research awards, including the DM Myers award, and the VicHealth Public Health Research award.

1983, Alison joined the Social Policy and Research Department a a social policy officer on a part time basis at the end of May (Brotherhood News, August 1983, no 17).
1992 Alison McClelland returned to the Brotherhood as Director, Social Policy & Research following the departure of Jan Carter (after 6 years of service) to take up the Chair of Social Work at the University of Melbourne (March).
In 1993, Youth unemployment was the focus of a special submission to the Federal Government. Bishop Michael Challen and Alison McClelland attended the National Meeting on Youth Training and Unemployment held by the Federal Government. (July)
in 1996, Alison McClelland, undertook a 3-week study tour of South-East Asia (Thailand, Indonesia & the Philippines), incorporating the international conference of the International Council on Social Welfare in Hong Kong. The trip “was prompted by the concern by the BSL that internationalisation, or globalisation, was having an impact on the perceived capacity of governments in Australia to respond to poverty and inequality”.
Alison is also a Life Member of the Brotherhood and the Victorian Council of Social Service and a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia (Victorian division). She was awarded the Centenary Medal for her contribution to social policy and research and was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to social policy and education.
Previously a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission, Alison also held senior positions in the Victorian Government, in academia and in the community sector (including at the Brotherhood). Alison is currently an independent consultant, Chair of the Good Shepherd Australia and New Zealand Board, an Executive Committee Member Australian Social Policy Association, and a Director of the Board of TAFE Gippsland

Alison McClelland BA (1968) GDip Social Studies (1969) was made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2017 for significant service to the community through contributions to the development, monitoring and analysis or social policy, and to education
Chaplain to the Brotherhood, based at Fitzroy. Left the BSL in December 1989 to become vicar of the Anglican parish of St Anselm, Middle Park.
Travers McLeod commenced as the Executive Director of the Brotherhood of St. Laurence in April 2022 from the Centre for Policy Development, an independent Australian policy institute he led as CEO for eight years and remains connected with as a Senior Fellow.
He began his career in public law, working for the State Solicitor’s Office in Western Australia and for Justice Michael Kirby in the High Court of Australia.
Travers holds a DPhil and MPhil (Dist) in International Relations from Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes scholar and was a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations. Travers worked as a Policy Adviser for the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford, playing a lead role in their 2013 report Now for the Long Term. He is the author of Rule of Law in War, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2015. Travers remains an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Martin School and holds adjunct positions at the University of Melbourne and the University of Western Australia. He is a board member of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture and an occasional moderator for the Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership.
George McWilliams was appointed to the BSL advisory board in 1947 by Archbishop Booth following Tucker’s request for two “suitable and strong” clerics.
