Creative Leisure Centre for children opened in Fitzroy in the new section of the Children’s Centre. During the school holidays an average of 75 children attended each day, with an average of 65 boys & girls attending after school (BSL 1962, Annual Report, p.7).

Widespread unemployment from February leads to great increase in numbers of applicants for assistance (BSL 1961, Annual Report, p.3).
Instead of giving toy parcels at Christmas, the Social Service Bureau organised a sale of second-hand toys "based on the conviction that parents would enjoy buying for their own children if the anxiety about cost could be removed. Accordingly charges were nominal and the toy sales planned to fall on days of Social Service payments or wages. The follow-up study conducted by students in the agency indicated that parents appreciated the new system and it will be repeated" in 1962 (BSL 1962, Annual Report, p.6).
St Laurence Park, Lara, grew to fifteen cottages, with plans for a community centre and flats (BSL 1961, Annual Report, p.10).
The Carrum Downs Settlement water supply was converted to water gravitation, having relied on bore water from its own well to this point (The Brotherhood News, March 1966 (No.172) p.4.)
First section of Keble Court, with Brunswick Rotary Club assisting with the furnishings, opened in December with 18 flats for elderly people. Almost 200 applications were received for the flats. Brunswick Council donated an area of land at the rear of Keble Court. Additional flats to be built when finances allow (BSL 1961, Annual Report, p.11; BSL 1962, Annual Report, p.4).

The gift of Avalon historic homestead and 80 acres of land facing Corio Bay by Mr & Mrs Richard Austin was announced in December (BSL 1962, Annual Report, p.1).
BSL published On Benefit, a study of unemployment and its effect on families, with analysis of unemployment relief provision, suggestions for new rates of benefits and criticism of unemployment statistics, August (BSL 1961, Annual Report, p.2 & p.16).
The Annual Report included an article on The Risk Capital of Social Welfare and the challenge for change, responding to the report Financing of Voluntary Welfare Agencies in Victoria, "produced by the Social Studies Department of the University of Melbourne, (in which) voluntary agencies are reminded that ". . . unless the voluntary agency can demonstrate that it has a vital and dynamic purpose to fulfill it can neither command nor expect financial support." (BSL 1961, Annual Report).
The European Australian Christian Fellowship (EACF) , the precursor of the Ecumenical Migration Centre (EMC), formed to serve the needs of migrant communities in Melbourne's inner suburbs, especially non-English speaking Greeks, Italians, Turks and Yugoslavs. The particular focus was on street work with youths, on community-based social and sporting activities, with some individual work (Langfield M. 1996, Espresso bar to EMC, p.5; see also "Formalising the EACF" in Langfield M. 1996, Espresso bar to EMC, p.4)
University Students Meet Social Problems - approximately twenty students lived at Morven and in a work and study week were introduced to the problems of the aged, the care of dependent children, mental retardation, rehabilitation, and the needs of developing countries. The program involved days spent visiting and working in institutions and evenings spent in discussion with an expert from the same field (The Brotherhood News, March 1966, (No.172) p.4).
