The Brotherhood's first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) provided a model which led to achieving improved collaboration with local Aboriginal organisations, more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people being employed with the Brotherhood and improved cultural awareness of Brotherhood staff.  The Brotherhood's second Rap, 2019-22 has further key outcomes including more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people being involved with the Brotherhood in culturally safe and appropriate services and sites. The Brotherhood officially recognised the voice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as expressed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

Over 1,000 energy accounts were switched to cheaper offers through Your Energy Broker, saving Victorian households an average of $450 on their gas and electricity bills (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

3,3561 people developed a savings habit through the Brotherhood's Saver Plus Program and received matched funding from the ANZ bank (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

Employment and Training

This year 2,921 young people were assisted with their transition to work (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

The Brotherhood partnered with two other non-profits to deliver the Education First Youth Foyer model in Victoria. The Foyers operated on three TAFE campuses. A longitudinal study published in 2019 found that 85% of young people leaving the Foyers were in work or education in the year after leaving a Foyer (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

The Brotherhood's Youth Employment Campaign spotlighted the persistently high rate of unemployment among young people (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

Older People

46,000 hours of services were provided to older people through the Brotherhood's Home Care Packages, enabling them to stay in their homes with appropriate support. Home Care Packages were provided to 834 households in Victoria (BSL 2019 Annual Report).

Organisational Aspects

The Brotherhood articulated its new 2019-2023 Strategic Plan.

  • Economic Security for All
  • Well being, Social Inclusion, Empowerment and Dignity for All
  • Inclusive Services and Communities
  • A Trusted Voice Nationally on Poverty and Disadvantage
