Community issues

The Saver Plus program, a joint program of the ANZ Bank and the Brotherhood was announced a Gold winner in the Best Socially Responsible Product category, in Money Magazine's Best of the Best 2008 Awards.  Saver Plus was developed by ANZ and the Brotherhood of St Laurence in 2003.  In 2007 it was being delivered in 19 areas across Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland through a partnership with Berry Street, The Smith Family, The Benevolent Society and the Victorian Government.  Saver Plus had been previously recognised for its contribution to financial literacy and inclusion, through the 2006 and the 2007 Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Community Business Partnerships. (ANZ BANK 2007).  
 

The Executive Director, Tony Nicholson, was invited by the Victorian Government to be part of the Stronger Community Organisations Project (SCOP) within A Fairer Victoria to work with VCOSS, other community sector, philanthropic and business leaders to develop a strategic approach to improving the capacity of the community sector and plan for the key challenges for not-for-profit sector sustainability and growth over the next 10 years.  The focus was on social innovation, strong governance, local collaborations and workforce development, to report back by October 2007.  

 

A Symposium Low Paid Work in Australia: Realities and responses was organised by the Centre for Public Policy (University of Melbourne) in association with the Brotherhood of St Laurence (17 October).   The launch of the BSL’s Working Years Social Barometer took place at the end of this event. 

 

Boots for All campaign was launched by the partnership of Essendon Football Club, the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Boots For All to collect and re-distribute football boots and equipment to disadvantaged teams across Australia.   

 

Employment & Training

The Phoenix Fridge refrigerator refurbishment program was relaunched with the opening of the purpose-designed workshop and warehouse in April  (Media release 26/04/2007).

 

Fundraising & resources

The Lanier Golf Classic in aid of the BSL held at the picturesque Waterford Valley golf course, raising $3,700 for the provision of meals and for social engagement opportunities (November)

The pre-Christmas Festival of Lights in Frankston again donated the proceeds to the BSL (November)

Launch of Giving Tree gift donation campaign partnership with ABC Local Radio 774 (November)

 

ABC Local Radio 774's Day of Love arranged for radio personality Red Symonds to donate his fridge to the BSL's Phoenix Fridge program  (November)

 

AXA sponsored the BSL’s Annual General Meeting (November)

 

Older People

Paul Brophy from Sambell Lodge received the 2007 federal Minister’s Award for Excellence in Aged Care in the ‘Residential Care Lifestyle’ category (BSL Annual Report 2007, p.17).

 

Organisational aspects (BSL)

The BSL's People, Work & Culture Department launched a booklet and guides (for managers and for staff) to Work & Life Balance within the Brotherhood, recognising the pressures of balancing work and family life and aiming to promote a more flexible attitude and approach to flexible work options.  The Booklet, for all staff, contains a summary of all the flexible work options currently available at the BSL as well as other useful information.  It is also provided to new staff on commencement and is proving to be a useful recruitment tool.  The Manager and Staff Guides sought to assist Managers to handle requests for flexible work options, and Staff to know how to go about appropriately requesting flexible work options. (Personal Communication November 2007).

The Victorian Government released the Work and Family Balance Manual - Better Practices for Better Business, which contained a number of references to and examples of BSL practices (November)  

 

Release of final report Towards New Indicators Of Disadvantage: Deprivation And Social Exclusion In Australia, an ARC joint project led by Peter Saunders with contribution from BSL and other partners Mission Australia, ACOSS and Anglicare Sydney.

Young people

Unsung Heroes - a second program of the 'digital storytelling for social justice project' took place involving Melbourne Grammar students and elders from the Coolibah Centre

Monash University and its community partners (including BSL) were awarded the Best Education & Training Collaboration Award at the Business & Higher Education Round Table (BHERT) for the Community Partnerships program which had 2nd year medical students on placement in a range of BSL services as a requirement of their studies  (November).
